Two South Dakota counties that are home to a Native American reservation are the only U.S. counties where a majority of residents live in poverty, according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2015-19 American Community Survey.
Todd County, S.D. (55.5 percent of population living below poverty line) and Mellette County, S.D. (52.5 percent), were the only two U.S. counties where more than 50 percent of the population fell below the federal poverty line of $25,750 for a family of four. Narby Ogalala Lakota County, also a majority-Native county, reported 46.2 percent of residents below the poverty line.
