WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2022
Eight of the 10 counties registering the biggest population increase of white Americans over the past decade have been Sunbelt retirement meccas, according to a Social Explorer analysis of newly released American Community Survey data. Among counties with more than 100,000 people, Sumter County, Fla., reported the largest percentage gain between 2010 and 2020, adding more than 40,000 non-Hispanic whites, a 57.2 percent increase. It was followed by Brunswick County, N.C. (35.1 percent), and St. Johns County, Fla. (34.7 percent).
The only non-traditional retirement locations in the top 10 were the District of Columbia, which saw its white population climb by 32.3 percent over the decade to rank seventh, and Orleans Parish, La., where the white population jumped by 31.6 percent to rank eighth.
